Bill of Materials (BOM)

What is a Bill of Materials list?

Bill of Materials (BOM) is the list of materials used in the production of an item. They are sometimes known as the product structure or product makeup.

Bill of materials (sometimes mispelled as Biller Materials) can include individual materials, intermediate assemblies and sub-assemblies, parts, components and amounts.

Depending on the user and the objectives of the BOM, a bill of materials may be incredibly detailed or a high level overview of the product.

From individual materials and quantities, to simple, sub-components that form the product makeup, bill of materials are important to have. BOMs can help manufacturers make the product, and are also helpful to brands wanting to understand their cost of production.

Manufacturing efficiencies are gained by regularly assessing the cost of items on your bill of materials.
